About Lakewood
Lakewood became a city in 1954. It began as a postwar planned community, with about 17,500 homes built in under three years starting in 1950, and Lakewood Center mall opened in 1951.
When it incorporated, Lakewood became California’s first contract city, hiring the LA County Sheriff’s Department instead of starting its own police. This Lakewood Plan was copied by many cities. Cases go to the Bellflower Courthouse.
