About the Lakewood Station

Lakewood made history in 1954 as California’s first contract city, hiring the Sheriff’s Department instead of starting its own police force. The idea became known as the Lakewood Plan, and many cities followed it.

Today the Lakewood Station also patrols Bellflower, Paramount, Artesia and Hawaiian Gardens, plus nearby unincorporated areas. Hawaiian Gardens briefly ran its own police department in the mid-1990s before returning to the Sheriff in 1997.
