About the San Jose Police Department

The San Jose Police Department headquarters is at 201 W. Mission Street, a short walk from the Main Jail. It is by far the biggest police department in the county, and a 2018 Civil Grand Jury report counted more than 25 holding spaces for adults in its station cells.

Most San Jose arrests do not stay at police headquarters. The Grand Jury found that the great majority of SJPD arrestees are taken straight to the Main Jail for booking; the department’s pre-processing center is kept for cases that need more investigation, interviews or evidence work first.

San Jose cases are heard at the Hall of Justice, on the same block of Hedding Street as the jail.

The Main Jail takes in roughly 48,000 bookings a year from every department in the county. Juvenile arrests go to Juvenile Hall instead, and juvenile cases do not use bail bonds.
