About the Main Jail in San Jose

The Main Jail stands at 150 W. Hedding Street, on the north edge of downtown San Jose, with the Hall of Justice criminal courthouse right next door. The tower in use today is Main Jail North, which opened in 1989. Its 1956 neighbor, Main Jail South, has been demolished, and the county is still deciding how to replace it.

This is where Santa Clara County books people: the county counts about 48,000 bookings a year, which makes its jail system the fifth largest in California. City departments from Palo Alto to Gilroy may hold someone in station cells for a few hours, but the booking, the bail amount and the bond all happen here.

Because the jail and the Hall of Justice share the block, people arrested in San Jose, Santa Clara, Campbell, Milpitas, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga usually have their first court date a few steps from where they were booked.

Main Jail questions

Is the Main Jail the same as Main Jail North?

Yes, today it is. The Main Jail complex used to have two buildings, North and South. Main Jail South, built in 1956, has been torn down, so the jail at 150 W. Hedding St. is the 1989 Main Jail North tower.

Why do Palo Alto and Gilroy arrests end up in San Jose?

Because the Main Jail is the only place in the county that books adults. City police can hold someone in a station cell for a short time, but the person is then driven to Hedding Street, about 14 miles from Palo Alto and 30 from Gilroy.

Is the courthouse next to the Main Jail?

Yes. The Hall of Justice at 190 W. Hedding St. is next door. It hears felony and misdemeanor cases from San Jose, Santa Clara, Campbell, Milpitas, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga.
