About the Palo Alto Police Department

The Palo Alto Police Department moved in September 2025 into the city’s new Public Safety Building at 250 Sherman Avenue, near California Avenue. The three-story building also houses the 911 dispatch center and the city’s emergency operations center; the old station on Forest Avenue is no longer the police headquarters.

The new building is a short walk from the Palo Alto Courthouse on Grant Avenue, which hears Palo Alto cases. Booking is a different story: adults are driven about 14 miles to the Main Jail in San Jose, the longest booking trip of any North County department.
