Posting bail for a Palo Alto arrest
Palo Alto has the courthouse but not the jail. The Palo Alto Courthouse on Grant Avenue hears North County cases, and the police department moved in 2025 into a new Public Safety Building around the corner on Sherman Avenue.
Adults arrested in Palo Alto are booked about 15 miles away at the Main Jail in San Jose, and that is where we post the bond. The Stanford campus next door is unincorporated county land with its own Stanford Department of Public Safety, whose officers are deputized by the Santa Clara County Sheriff.
The Public Safety Building is a three-story building over a basement, next to the California Avenue parking garage, and also holds the city’s 911 center. None of that changes where bail is posted: for an adult arrest it is always the Main Jail in San Jose.
