About the Northern Branch Jail
The Northern Branch Jail on Black Road is the newer of the county’s two jails. It was built so that police in the north county would not have to drive every arrest to Santa Barbara; the Sheriff’s Office describes it as a North County location that cuts the time officers spend transporting and booking people.
The jail took its first inmates on January 22, 2022. It has a state-rated capacity of 344 beds and an operating capacity of 376, planned for about 300 men and 40 women, in a mix of medium- and high-security housing.
Arrests come here from Santa Maria police, Guadalupe police, the Sheriff’s stations in Orcutt, the Lompoc Valley, Buellton, Solvang and New Cuyama, and, when people stay in custody, from the Lompoc police jail.
