About the Herbert Hughes Correctional Center

The Herbert Hughes Correctional Center, or HHCC, dates from the early 1960s and is named after Herbert Hughes, Imperial County’s sheriff from 1955 to 1966. Its six dormitories hold 314 people, the most of the three buildings on the Applestill Road campus.

HHCC runs the kitchen that cooks three meals a day for the whole jail, staffed by screened incarcerated workers, and a multipurpose room where many have earned a GED or high school diploma. Most people housed here are sentenced and working; those who keep up their programs can earn visits on the front lawn.

Because most people at HHCC have already been sentenced, bail usually is not the question here. When someone at HHCC is still waiting for court, we post the bond like anywhere else on the campus.
