About Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is the county seat. Its landmark County Courthouse on Anacapa Street, finished in 1929, now hears civil and family cases; criminal cases are heard a few blocks away at the Figueroa courthouse, next to police headquarters.
The Main Jail is not downtown. It is on Calle Real near the Goleta line, about 4 miles from the city center, and that is where bail is posted. The Santa Barbara police station itself has only two holding cells, used for a few hours at most.
Neighborhoods outside the city limits, such as Montecito to the east and the Goleta Valley to the west, are patrolled by the Sheriff’s Office, not Santa Barbara police.
