About Sunnyvale Public Safety

Sunnyvale does not have a separate police department. Since 1950 it has run a combined Department of Public Safety in which the same officers are trained and certified as police officers, firefighters and EMTs. The department is based at 700 All America Way.

Public safety officers can hold an arrested adult for a short time in the department’s station cells, but people who are not cited and released are booked at the Main Jail in San Jose, about 7 miles away.

Sunnyvale is a North County city under the court’s rules, so its cases go to the Palo Alto Courthouse, about 7 miles from the station, not to San Jose.
