About the Milpitas Police Department
The Milpitas Police Department began with the city itself, when Milpitas incorporated in January 1954, and has worked from its building at 1275 N. Milpitas Boulevard since 1991. Its first chief was the first police chief in California to require a two-year college degree for officers, in 1957.
Milpitas is also home to the county’s Elmwood jail complex, but that is a Sheriff’s facility, not the city’s. Milpitas police arrests are booked at the Main Jail in San Jose, about 7 miles south, and heard at the Hall of Justice.
Milpitas was left out of the 2018 Grand Jury’s list of cities with station holding cells, so arrests are usually taken straight to the Main Jail. The city’s 1915 grammar school, once City Hall, is one of its landmarks.
