About the Elmwood Women’s Facility
The women’s facility opened in 1964 in the northeast part of the Elmwood complex in Milpitas. It was long known as the Correctional Center for Women, and a 2003 Civil Grand Jury report listed room for about 500 women there.
Like the men’s side, it is not where people are booked: women are booked at the Main Jail on Hedding Street in San Jose, about 5 miles south, and then housed here. The Grand Jury notes that Elmwood holds both women who are waiting for court and women serving sentences.
For a mother, daughter or partner held here, the bail question is the same as anywhere in the county: if she has not been sentenced and bail has been set, we can post the bond through the Sheriff’s jail staff, day or night.
