About Taft

Taft is an oil town on the west side of the valley that became a city in 1910. Its police department runs its own jail on Commerce Way, one of the few city jails left in Kern County, and bail bonds are accepted there.

The neighborhoods just outside the city, Taft Heights, South Taft and Ford City, are unincorporated and patrolled by the Sheriff’s Taft Substation. Taft cases are heard at the Lamont courthouse, about 31 miles away; the old Taft court branch no longer hears criminal cases.
