About Bakersfield
Bakersfield is the Kern County seat and its largest city. The Bakersfield Police Department’s headquarters is at 1601 Truxtun Avenue, on the same street as the Metropolitan Division courthouse at 1415 Truxtun, where Bakersfield’s criminal cases are heard. The department also runs a West Substation at 1301 Buena Vista Road.
People arrested in Bakersfield are not booked downtown. They are taken to the Sheriff’s Inmate Reception Center at the Lerdo Justice Facility, about 11 miles north of the city center, and released from there after bail is posted. The old Central Receiving Facility on Truxtun Avenue now holds people only for court.
Unincorporated neighborhoods around the city, such as Oildale across the Kern River, are patrolled by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office rather than Bakersfield police, so an arrest there is a Sheriff’s case even with a Bakersfield mailing address.
