About the Central Detention Center
The Central Detention Center on East Rialto Avenue opened in 1971 as the Central Jail and was the county’s main jail for more than 20 years. After a short closure it reopened in 1994 under a contract with the U.S. Marshals Service.
Today it is the main booking jail for police and Sheriff’s stations in the East Valley, processing more than 20,000 people a year, and it is also the Marshals’ West Coast hub for federal prisoners. The San Bernardino Justice Center, where East Valley criminal cases are heard, is less than a mile away.
