About the Long Beach Police Department
Long Beach elected its first city marshal on January 30, 1888, and named its first police chief in 1908. That year Fanny Bixby Spencer became one of the country’s first women police officers.
LBPD also provides police services to the Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Airport, Long Beach Transit and Long Beach City College. Its city jail is one of California’s largest, with separate men’s and women’s facilities.
