Gardena became a city in September 1930, and its first police chief, George Norman, was hired weeks later as the only officer. He drove his own 1930 Studebaker on patrol.
As the city grew, the department needed more room. On August 29, 1963, it moved into the current station at 1718 W. 162nd St.
