About East Mesa

East Mesa was built as a probation camp. The Sheriff’s Office took it over in 1991 and long called it the East Mesa Detention Facility before renaming it a reentry facility.

It is a medium-security jail with six dorms on eight acres and a rated capacity of 760, mostly for sentenced men at lower security levels. Programs focus on going home: job skills, vocational training and landscaping crews. In 2017 its kitchen cooked for all of the county’s adult jails.
